Indo–European Peer Exchange on Green MSME Product Innovation: Structuring Longer-Tenor Loans
The peer exchange, convened virtually on 24 February 2026, brought together senior representatives from Indian financial institutions, development finance organizations, and climate finance practitioners to examine the operational barriers that constrain the structuring and scaling of longer-tenor green loans for MSMEs. The exchange focused on practical lending challenges faced by financial institutions, including risk perception, asset–liability mismatches, collateral requirements, and the limited availability of catalytic financial instruments that can support longer repayment horizons for green investments. The session combined a moderated peer roundtable with a case study presentation by Jaime Marin Otero, Head of Sustainable Business at BBVA (Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria), who shared international experience on structuring sustainable finance products and integrating climate considerations into lending practices. The discussion enabled participants to reflect on institutional experiences, credit risk considerations, and emerging financing structures that could support longer-tenor green MSME lending in India. Through practitioner dialogue and cross-regional insights, the exchange aimed to generate practical recommendations that can inform product innovation, risk management approaches, and future pilots under the GIFS Initiative.
